The Assessment Process

Step 1: Complete an intake form for your child

When you refer your child for assessment at Sombok Psychology, we will ask you to complete a Child Intake Form to give us detailed information about your child. Following this, we will advise you of the wait time for an appointment and schedule your first intake session with a psychologist.

Step 2: Attend a parent intake session

The second step is for parents to attend an 80 minute intake session at Sombok Psychology. During this session, a psychologist will meet with you to gather comprehensive background information about your child. The psychologist will ask you questions about your child’s birth history, developmental history, medical history, academic history, social/emotional history and family history. We need to collect all this information to know what assessment is needed. At the end of this session, the psychologist will inform you about the next steps. If there is a large amount of information to discuss, sometimes the intake session will be done over multiple sessions. We may ask you to complete more questionnaires to provide us with further information.

Step 3: Information gathering and school consultation

Following the parent intake session, your psychologist will gain your consent to speak to someone at your child’s school (e.g., school teacher, learning support person). We will ask your child’s school for their feedback about your child’s behaviour in the classroom and academic performance.

If you have had previous assessments completed, we will ask you to send us the details of those reports. If your child is seeing a doctor or other health professional, we will ask your consent to also speak to these professionals to collect comprehensive information about your child.

Step 4: Observation session/s with the child

Before proceeding with formal assessment, we will often schedule your child to attend a session at the clinic for observation. This session provides us with important information about your child’s behaviour, which can be used to inform which assessment tools we will use at the next step. This session also provides an opportunity for your child to become familiar with Sombok Psychology so that they feel comfortable when completing the assessments.

Step 5: Assessment session/s

Once the assessment tools have been agreed upon, your psychologist will schedule the assessment sessions. The length of the assessment and the number of sessions will depend on which assessment tools we have recommended your child complete. On the day of the assessment, we will ask that your child is well rested, fed and hydrated so that we get their best performance.

Step 6: Scoring, interpretation and report writing

After the assessment sessions, your psychologist will score the assessments, interpret the results and write a comprehensive report. We aim to have the report finalised within two weeks of the assessment sessions.

 Step 7: Feedback session

The psychologist will meet with the child and parents to provide feedback on the results of the assessment. Sometimes we will also arrange a feedback session with the school. The feedback session will give parents the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the recommendations.

Following the feedback meeting, parents will receive the finalised report. The report is yours to keep and can be shared with others.
